Happy happy New Year! Wishing you the very best year ever!!
Because of the business, I am in, people assume that I will be crazy busy for the next couple of months because so many make it a new year’s resolution to get fit, healthy, lose weight or something like that. Truth be told – yes, it gets busy, but not as busy as it should. And the reason for that is the same reason that most new year’s resolutions fail. People who make them fail to plan. And when you don’t have a plan for your goals, then you will not reach them. It’s really simple. I have had to learn this the hard way in my business. And it wasn’t an easy lesson to learn. The way I see it – Goals or New Year’s Resolutions is just something we say, dream about. We want to reach our goals and achieve our resolutions – but we don’t because we don’t have a plan in place. It’s like saying “I want to get my car fixed this week” and then never calling or making an appointment with a mechanic, or heading out for a sail around the world without a map and expecting to make it without getting terribly lost and going in circles. Instead, we need to set INTENTIONS.
Intentions are goals – with a plan.
So let’s take a typical goal people set at the beginning of a new year:
“This year I want to start working out! Yes, this is going to be the year I join a gym and get fit”
A resolution is made, pat on the shoulder….ring in the new year and here we sit on January 1st, 2nd, 3rd…..10th…and no closer to the goal. Why?
Because. There. Is. No. Plan.
So – let’s do this!
You have to answer these questions first:
- How am I going to go about getting fit? (join a gym, walk with a friend, take classes?)
- Where am I going to do it?
- How much time can I realistically set aside for this?
- How important is this to me?
Once you have the answers to those questions – then your corresponding action steps become much more clear:
Action step 1: Sign up for a tour of the gym and an introductory session with a trainer.
Action step 2: Join gym close to work; OR – hire a personal trainer to come to your home; OR – call your neighbour and schedule a time to start walking with him/her after work on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursdays for example.
Action step 3: Schedule on your calendar, 45 minutes for exercise 4 times per week, and treat them as mandatory appointments, like a dentist appointment or meeting with a co-worker
Action step 4: Perhaps this should be asked first, but I feel that it is only after answering the other three that you realize how important this is to you. Are you willing and going to take the other three steps? If yes, then this is important to you. Because it is not enough to say “my health matters to me more than anything” if you are not willing to take specific steps to do something about improving it.
