You know how life gets in the way and stops you from doing the things you want to do, and especially this time of year? Holiday Season Stress leaves no time to take care of yourself, exercise, read etc.….? Life can feel really out of control sometimes and then that results in weight gain, lack of exercise and strength, back pain, low self-esteem, lack of confidence, lack of life mastery etc.
One of the toughest times in my life was when I was getting divorced after 19 years of marriage. Things were hostile. My four boys were teenagers! I was forking over thousands of dollars to my lawyer. I worried a lot about my boys, stressed about my life and the fact that I had spent almost 20 years as a stay at home mom and now had to figure things out financially on my own. But through it all, there was one part of my life that I did control. One part that no one could take from me and that was ME. My health, my body, and what I did with it. The thing that got me through (aside from the best friends in the world) – was working out! 6 days a week I did something for myself. I went to the gym and worked out. And every single time I felt better when I walked out than when I walked in. No, I did not spend hours in there. Sometimes only 30-45 mins or so. But giving myself that time, honouring my health, my body and mind absolutely saved me.
I am not comparing the Stress of the Holiday Season to a divorce, but it is truly one of the most stressful times of the year for a lot of people for a variety of reason. Extended Family dynamics, financial expectations with regards to putting on a magical Christmas for your kids, lots of prep for meals and get together, bad for you food, stressful office parties, too much drinking and we quickly lose ourselves completely.
Know this: There is time, even if it’s only 15-20 mins. And you will feel so much better. You will have mastered one awesome thing and that is taking care of yourself and as a result, you will be so much better equipped to take care of everyone else.
